CGS Working Group Application Guidelines
The Center for Global Studies sponsors a number of Working Groups. These groups bring together interdisciplinary teams of faculty and graduate students with interests in a common set of questions relating to processes of globalization. In recent years CGS has supported Working Groups on Globalization and Society in India, Social Theory and Globalization, and Transitional and Transnational Justice (for more details click here). Working Groups are envisioned to be rather informal and flexible enough to respond to opportunities or members’ interest over the course of an academic year.
Funding is allocated annually with proposals due by October 1. For those interested in continuing an existing or proposing a new Working Group, the points outlined below should help you provide the documents CGS needs to evaluate and approve your proposal and to provide your Working Group with funding. Please include such other information as you think will be helpful for CGS to understand your vision of your working group.
- For renewal applications, a brief report (1 ½ to 2 pages) that notes past activities supported by the Working Group, and provides a very basic account of how funds were expended. We will use this report to update the CGS web page on Working Groups.
- For all requests for new Working Group funding, a brief proposal (1 ½ to 2 pages) that includes:
- A one paragraph Mission Statement that defines the Working Group’s overall goals.
- An outline of proposed activities by the Working Group and how they relate to the advancement of collaborative, inter-disciplinary research in the area of global studies.
- A point of contact (an individual or a small core planning committee) for CGS to use to answer questions that arise about the activities or expenditures of the Working Group. While CGS encourages self-management of Working Groups activities, it is necessary that we contact someone who can speak on behalf of the group and who can make decisions regarding expenditures of funds.
- A list of active members.
- A basic budget that estimates costs by principal events, such as funds to support a given workshop, funds to support participation in a particular conference, and other related activities promoting scholarship.
