CGS Working Group Application Guidelines
The Center for Global Studies sponsors a number of Working Groups. These groups bring together interdisciplinary teams of faculty and graduate students with interests in a common set of questions relating to processes of globalization, and are envisioned to be rather informal and flexible enough to respond to opportunities or members’ interest over the course of an academic year. Funding is allocated annually with proposals for the 2012-2013 academic year due by Friday, March 30, 2012, at 5:00pm. Award announcements will be made in late April.
For those interested in continuing an existing or proposing a new Working Group, the points outlined below should help you provide the kinds of data CGS needs to evaluate and approve your proposal and provide your Working Group with funding. Please include such other information as you think will be helpful for CGS to understand the vision of your working group.
- For renewal applications, a brief report (1½ to 2 pages) that notes past activities supported by the Working Group, and provides a very basic account of how funds were expended. We will use this report to update the CGS web page on Working Groups.
- Those requesting funding for a new Working Group funding should submit a brief proposal (1½ to 2 pages) that includes:
- A one paragraph Mission Statement that defines the Working Group’s overall goals.
- An outline of proposed activities by the Working Group and how they relate to the advancement of collaborative, inter-disciplinary research in the area of global studies.
- A point of contact (an individual or a small core planning committee) for CGS to use to answer questions that arise about the activities or expenditures of the Working Group. CGS wants to let the Working Groups self-manage their activities but from time to time needs to be able to contact someone who can speak on behalf of the group and who can make decisions regarding expenditures of funds.
- A list of active members. Mason Faculty members of different schools, colleges, programs, and/or departments should constitute the majority of active members.
- All proposals should include a basic budget that estimates costs by principal events, such as funds to support a given workshop, honoraria for workshop participants employed by other institutions, and student research assistants. Travel by Working Group members to present Working Group research to an academic conference or workshop may be supported but must be clearly linked to the overarching Working Group agenda.
CGS awards a maximum of $1500 per working group with a maximum of 1/3 of the money budgeted for student assistants. Group members are expected to be of the Mason faculty and student communities. It is anticipated that funding by CGS will enable events to be held at Mason campuses throughout the academic year to promote the work of each group.
Details of the groups currently funded by CGS may be found on our Programs page
