FACULTY RESEARCH FUNDING 2009-2010
Purpose
To provide financial support for individual or small groups of faculty members to engage in scholarly research on global affairs, with a particular emphasis on projects that synthesize the cultural, economic, political, technological and scientific aspects of globalization.
Amount of Award
There will be several awards given out up to $2500 for individuals and up to $5000 for small groups. Awards may be used to cover research expenses, including travel, research assistance, or some combination of both.
Eligibility
- An applicant must be a full-time faculty member at the time of receipt of the award.
- An applicant cannot be a past recipient of Faculty Research Funding of the Center for Global Studies.
- Individuals whose rank is prefixed with Affiliate, Adjunct, Term, or Visiting are not eligible.
- Faculty members who have been denied tenure in the sixth year or who are in the final year of a terminal contract are not eligible.
- A faculty member who receives Global Studies research funding is expected to remain a full-time employee of the university for at least one academic year after the conclusion of the award.
- Groups of faculty members who apply must have a designated Principal Investigator who will submit the report and serve as liaison for the group and the Center for Global Studies. The designated Principal Investigator must qualify based upon the before listed criteria.
- Applications for group funding must include faculty from at least two different academic units.
Selection
Global Studies Research Funding is awarded upon recommendation of a peer review panel drawn from the Center’s network of associate faculty and/or past recipients of the funding.
Period of the Award
Awards must be used within one year of notification.
Post-Award Requirements
Faculty receiving awards are expected to outline the findings of their research in a short written piece (750-1000 words) for the Global Studies Review, and may be asked to make a presentation of their research to fellow faculty and students. A faculty member who accepts Global Studies research support is expected to serve as a reviewer of future funding applications.
Deadline
The deadline for receipt of applications by the Center for Global Studies is November 1, 2009 at 5:00pm. Applicants will receive notification by early December. In fairness to other potential applicants, late applications will not be considered.

Application Details
Global Studies research funding applications should include the following:
A. Personal Information Page including all details specified under personal information below, including a one paragraph summary no more than 250 words. The project summary should be written in such a way as to make clear to non-specialist readers the procedures and significance of the proposed research. Click here to download form.
B. Description of Project (maximum of 5 pages, single-spaced) for non-specialist readers. The description should be brief, non-technical, and include:
- A statement of the central problem or question to be addressed by this research and its scholarly or creative significance.
- The objectives of the project, the methods to be employed, its relation to existing literature in the field, and a timetable for completion of the work. Applications that demonstrate a clear commitment to multiple disciplines will be given preference.
- An explanation of how the applicant's program, department, or the university will benefit from this research. A description of how you will share what you have learned with colleagues, students and the external research community, including publications and presentations.
- A description of how this project will contribute to the development of future research opportunities including external support, new partnerships, etc.
- An explanation of how this project relates to the field of global studies and the mission of the Center for Global Studies.
C. Budget (one page) of itemized expenses (e.g. equipment, travel, material) that the requested amount will cover. The budget may include a stipend.
